Jacques Offenbach

Biography

  • Offenbach started the violin at age 6 and the cello at age 9. He enrolled in the Paris Conservatoire but quit after a year since he found it boring.
  • He opened his own small theater in Paris called the Bouffes-Parisiens since the larger theater in town was uninterested in staging his shows.
  • Despite being German-born, French Emperor Nepoleon III personally granted him French citizenship and presented him with the prestigious Legion of Honor.
