William Grant Still

Biography

  • Still was the first African-American composer to have a symphony performed by a major United States orchestra.
  • He was also the first African-American to conduct a major United States orchestra.
  • Still’s nickname is the “Dean of African-American Classical Composers.”
  • Studied medicine before switching to music (he began his music studies at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio)
  • His opera The Troubled Island (written in 1938) featured libretti (lyrics) by poet Langston Hughes
