Biography
- Schumann was heavily influenced by written literature – lots of his music is based on poetry or inspired by novels. This makes sense, since his father was a bookseller and publisher, so Schumann would have spent his childhood surrounded by books.
- He married Clara Wieck (Schumann) in 1840 against her father’s wishes. Clara was a great composer and pianist herself, and many of his piano pieces were written for her.
- He spent most of his life writing for piano and voice; he didn’t begin writing for orchestra until 1841 (at Clara’s urging).
