Biography
- He was known as the “Waltz King” of Vienna. He wrote more than 150 waltzes, including “The Blue Danube,” which is now one of the most famous waltzes in the world.
- Strauss’s father, Johann Strauss I, was also a famous composer, but he didn’t want his son to become a musician. Young Johann secretly practiced violin, with help from his mother, and started his own orchestra at just 19. Soon his orchestra was competing with his father’s!
- Brahms was a big fan of Strauss’s music. When Strauss’s stepdaughter asked Brahms to sign her fan, he wrote the first notes of “The Blue Danube” on it and added, “Alas, not by Johannes Brahms!”
