Music Manners

A symphony performance is special because it’s live, which means the musicians can hear you just as well as you can hear them! Following a few simple rules helps everyone have a great time:

Quiet

Turn off cell phones, tablets, and gaming devices before the show. Bright screens distract everyone, including the musicians on stage. And once the music starts, try not to talk. Musicians say a quiet, focused audience is part of what makes a live performance feel so alive!

Still

Try to visit the restroom or water fountain before the show starts or during intermission. Theatres are built to make music easier to hear, which is amazing for the orchestra but means it carries whispers, rustling programs, and footsteps too. Staying still helps everyone enjoy the music better!

Listen

Can you hear all the instruments you see on stage? Checking out the composers and music on the program before you go can help you catch things you might otherwise miss! Was the music trying to tell a story? Did it remind you of any other kinds of music?

Clap

Welcome the concertmaster (first violinist) and the conductor with applause when they take the stage. Then wait to clap until a piece is completely finished. Some pieces have several sections called “movements,” with pauses in between. You’ll know it’s over when the conductor lowers their hands and turns to face the audience.

What to Wear

You won’t need a fancy gown or a tuxedo since there’s no strict dress code at the Ohio Theatre! Nice pants, a button-down shirt, a polo, or a dress all work great. The most important thing is that you’re comfortable enough to enjoy the music!

Pro Tip: Theatres can get chilly, so bring a sweater or light jacket to stay cozy!
